SOCIAL IMPACT

Community participation is critical in mangroves' conservation and restoration. Our project partners at Eden Reforestation and ISFP work together with local communities to restore landscapes on a massive scale, thereby creating jobs and improving local livelihoods for people in remote regions.

One of the key ways our projects involves local communities is through employment opportunities. By hiring individuals from nearby villages and towns, the projects not only provides much-needed jobs but also fosters a sense of ownership and stewardship over the reforestation projects. These jobs range from tree planting and maintenance to nursery management and seed collection, offering diverse opportunities for community members to contribute to the restoration of their own landscapes. Putting the local community at the center, inspires great commitment to reforestation in their region and a sense of ownership to protect their mangrove forests long-term.

Creating independent communities

The projects also aims to create new sources of income for participants, by increasing the profits of fisheries, and protect coastal areas from flooding. The planting of mangroves has also empowered many women, some of whom have independent income streams for the very first time.

“Selling mangrove toffee product has become my primary source of income,” said Mrs. Cami, one new entrepreneur. “I never imagined this could happen to me.”

Inclusive decision making

In addition to employment and training, the projects fosters community involvement through inclusive decision-making processes. Local leaders and stakeholders are consulted and involved at every stage of the project, from planning and implementation to monitoring and evaluation. This ensures that projects are tailored to the specific needs and priorities of each community, fostering a sense of ownership and long-term commitment.
